George Washingmachine is known as a jazz violinist, vocalist and visual artist. He gives us a spinning insiders viewpoint on his exhibition, Within at the Darlington Install Project (DIP). Knocking The Top Off: A People’s History of Alcohol in Australia is an intoxicating journey through Australia’s relationship with alcohol. It features short expositions and deep dives into incidents, eras, groups and individuals. The collection provides an alternative history of Australian society and culture from the bottom up. Alex Ettling, Co-editor, talks us through its contents and serves a curation of Australian music from both editors; Iain McIntyre. The Christmas Gift Salon opens at the Liverpool Street Gallery and we hear from the Director, Kate Alstergren, Gallerist James Erksine, and other artists.

The Womanifesto Way: Sydney Gathers at 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art, explores the ethos of this women-centre arts collective through collaborative exchanges between Womanifesto artists based in Sydney, and by embarking on open process of visual and digital art-history making that reveals nearly three decades of collaborative reinvention. We hear from one of the founding members Phaptawan Suwannakudt who is curator and artist in The Womanifesto Way: Sydney Gathers and participating artist Sue Pedley. Damage is a recently released independent drama film by Madeleine Blackwell.  Madeleine is an accomplished writer and director who works across a range of theatre and screen projects.  The drama is an expression of the importance of humanity and hope in a world where war is becoming the norm and fear of the refugee a symptom.  It features the filmmakers mother who recently passed away following the film’s release, and Ali AI Jenabi, who was the subject of the book The People Smuggler written by Robin De Crespigny of 2012. The inaugural Collabor8Women Prize 2023. The finalists work are being presented at Ellipsis Gallery in Woolloomooloo, in an exhibition titled Connected. Karen Eck, PR consultancy eckfactor, and Gallerist and artist Mark Wotherspoon talk us through what it’s all about.

The Wonderland Art Festival is an annual exhibition that showcases local artists and held over three days at Bronte Surf Club. It’s named in honour of Wonderland City Amusement Park at Tamarama from the late 1800s. This is the second event Abigail Lutzen is presenting her work, and she talks us through the inspiration of her paintings. Kath Fries, artist and curator of HIDDEN, a sculpture exhibition at the Rookwood Cemetery. She talks us through this year’s expansion to include the new Schools and Stonemasons categories. Opening night of the Postgraduate exhibition at the National Art School achieves record attendance, and for good reason. We hear from one of the graduating students, Joshua, Copland Nielson. 100 Women 100 Stories is a production is set to be performed for one night at the Town Hall. We hear from the Founder and Director of The House that Dan Built, Danielle O’Keefe.

Sydney-based writer and journalist Mark Mordue and highly regarded author and academic Chris Fleming, discuss what has happened to civil debate and the reasonable exchange of competing ideas in public, to conversations that might lead to productive compromise or simply agreeing to disagree?

This discussion was recorded prior to the panel discussion at the Greek Theatre, Addi Road Centre, Wednesday, 25 October 2023. Panellists include: Mark Mordue, Chris Fleming, Lucinda Holdforth, Michael West and Sheila Ngoc Pham.

HIDDEN Rookwood Sculptures takes place amongst the pathways and gardens in one of the oldest sections of Rookwood Cemetery. The free exhibition receives submissions from artists responding to the Cemetery’s evocative sense of place with themes of contemplation that span life cycles of love and remembrance, death and mourning. Exhibition Curator, Kath Fries, talks us through this year’s exhibition.

Writing Objects is a new series of writing engaging with the Powerhouse Collection, opening it up to new audiences and communities. THE UNIVERSAL MACHINE:  UNCOVERING ADA’S LEGACY is  the commissioned project written by Professor Toby Walsh at the Powerhouse Museum. In this work he uncovers the legacy of Ada Lovelace, the world’s first computer programmer.  Toby is one of the world’s leading researchers in artificial intelligence (AI). Faking It: Artificial Intelligence in a Human World (La Trobe University Press, 2023) is his seventh book and set to be launched next week. What has happened to civil debate and the reasonable exchange of competing ideas in public, to conversations that might lead to productive compromise or simply agreeing to disagree? This is a question to be explored on a panel discussion, Uncivil Society: polarisation and breakdown in conversation today, next week at the Addi Road Centre and we hear from two of the speakers, Dr Chris Fleming and Mark Mordue. The Blue Mountain Writers Festival returns to Katoomba and we hear from the newly appointed Artistic Director, Maeve Marsden.

Art dealer and curator Damien Minton presents 13 shows in 13 weeks at the Sheffer Gallery in Darlington. The showcase of exhibitions have attracted buyers and attendees in great numbers. Damien speaks candidly on producing the series, industry insights and the artists exhibiting. The Hollywood Hotel (HH) has been an artist studio for David Art Wales, who has been on a year-long artist in residence, which has culminated into a solo-exhibition, A Man Walks into A Bar. We hear from him at HH on how it all came about, his experiences, the exhibition and new directions. The Sydney Ceramics Market returns to Carriageworks after a successful debut in 2022. Featuring over 90 artists and makers, the Market is part of Sydney Craft Week and host to independent practitioners. The founders Melody Brunton and Samee Lapham tell us more about it.

Creative Australia has released the results of the 2022 National Arts Participation Survey.  It’s the first comprehensive study of Australians’ engagement with arts and creativity since the disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic. The results reinforce just how important arts, culture and creativity are for helping us through difficult times.  Dr Georgie McClean, Executive Director Development and Partnerships, at Creative Australia provides us with insight. Laugh Your Arts Off is back in 2023 for one night only.  All proceeds help fund the vital work of Arts Law.  The Arts Law Centre of Australia provides legal advice and information on a wide range of arts related legal and business matters.  The fundraiser is brought together by the Hearts for Arts Law is a group of young professionals who volunteer their time and expertise to raise money for Arts Law. Made up of lawyers, arts workers and students the committee hosts casual events for both lawyers and artists that provide networking opportunities and raise money and support for Arts Law.  Lee Elsdon, Deputy Chair, Hearts For Arts Law Fundraising Committee tells us more. On at Palace Cinemas is a suite of screen pleasures as part of this year’s program of the ST Ali Italian Film Festival.  To point us toward some of what’s showing we hear from Festival Director, Elysia Zeccola. LOVEGRUNGEPEACHES happened at Since I Left You on Tuesday evening in the YCK laneway heritage venue on Kent Street. The poetry event is the third in a series called pie in the sky poets.  Presented by Poetry Sydney and hosted by the curator Rico Craig who we’ll hear from him with a tribute poem.
