The Asia Pacific Arts Awards celebrates diaspora artists and arts workers across the Asia Pacific region. The Awards recognise and promote Australian artists, collectives and organisations engaged in creating, and presenting work. Zainab Syed is the Director of International for Creative Australia, explains the strategic objectives and reviewed categories. The Mosman Art Trail takes in 12 scenic locations that follow a series of interpretive signs where you can stand and admire the views that inspired 12 notable paintings from the Mosman Art Gallery’s Balnaves collection. Gallery Director, John Cheeseman, provides insight. A major survey exhibtion by Dale Frank, presents 45 large-scale paintings, sculptures and installations created over the past decade including nine never-before exhibted works. Senior Curator, Katrina Cashman takes us on a Gallery walk of Growers and Showers at the National Art School Gallery.

Parramatta-based Filipina–Australian artist Marikit Santiago is the recipient of the 2024 La Prairie Art Award. The acquisitive award was founded in 2022 and supports Australian women artists.  We hear from Marikit at AGNSW, seated in front of her two works displayed as part of the Making Worlds exhibition. Kimberley Hodgson’s latest role as Anita in West Side Story, is a physically challenging dream and we hear from her on what it’s like to perform on the grand stage on the Harbour. Twisted Tales is an exhibition that explores the loss of innocence with adulthood through an unsettling reinvention of childhood figures and their stories.  The artist Lihnida Krstanoska-Blazeska opens her first solo exhibition at gaffa Gallery, and provides insight.

Urban Enigmas is an exhibition of images from eight photos artists that unlock the subtle mysteries of urban places at gaffa Gallery. We take a walk with the curator and participating artist, Lynn Smith and we hear also from exhibiting artist Shawn Sijnstra. Head On Photo Festival Founder and Director, Moshe Rosenzveig speaks on their petition campaign to Save the Festival. The campaign draws attention to the concerns over the persistent shortfall in funding and the consequent downscaling of the Festival.

Urban Enigmas is a group exhibition of eight artists at the recently renovated gaffa Gallery. The curator and participating artist Lynn Smith, prefers not to be categorised as a street photographer, “We are artists. We use the real world as raw material (like a potter uses clay) to fashion objects called photographs.”

Take a walk with Lynn Smith, as he describes the exhibited works in Urban Enigmas at gaffa. Hear also from exhibiting artist Shawn Sijnstra. The exhibition culminates a book, which can be purchased at gaffa.

The United Nations International Women’s Day 2024 theme is invest in women: accelerate progress. We hear from a range of artists on there shared thoughts in acknowledgement of theis special women on-air at Eastside. The Biennale of Sydney’s 50th anniversary year features 87 artists and collectives from 47 countries. The Artistic Directors Cosmin Costinas and Inti Guerrero’s 24th reiteration, Ten Thousand Suns, proposes celebration as both a method and a source of joy inspired by the legacies of collective resistance and coming together to thrive in the face of injustice. Following the media preview, you will hear from six exhibiting women artists exibiting across four venues: Pacific Sisters (AGNSW), Sana Shahmuradova Tanska (Artspace), Citra Sasmita and Mangala Bai Maravi (Chak Chak Museum), and Hayv Kahranman (MCA). Vessels of Love is an annual poetry program presented by Poetry Sydney that seeks to explore ideas and forms of love over Valentine’s Day week.  The first edition was part of the City of Sydney’s series of activations to attract people back to the Central Business District following the pandemic in 2021. This year The Salons: Love in transmission is the fourth project that allows us an entry point into poetry of impermanence and fragility of taut lines and tensile forces. The Salons directors, Angie, Joan and Penny provide insight and we present the participating poets for Love in transmission on the airwaves in two parts: Albert Lin, Ali Whitelock, Gillian Swain, Luke Patterson, Magdalena Ball, Paris Rosemont and Richard James Allen.

TECTONIC is an imposing black slab installation work that spans 30 square metres at Passage Gallery to awaken the Moon for Lunar New Year, in the heart of China Town.  The artist Kien Situ is a multidisciplinary Asian-Australian who works across architecture, sculpture, film and installation. Passage is a non-commercial gallery dedicated to installation art presenting exhibitions that can be viewed 24/7 and without opening hours. We hear from Ashleigh Jones, who is one of the three curators of Passage. Fooled Enough With Numbers offers a glimpse into how artists integrate the digital in their process, navigating the transformative and material potential afforded by emerging technologies. Curated by Michelle Chanique, the three exhibiting artists Kenneth Lambert, Thomas Marcusson and Justin Harvey provide insight from the Stanley Street Gallery.

Jazz Money launched her film WINHANGANHA at AGNSW in November last year. It’s a film born from a desire to make sense of the archival inheritances that shape our present realities. WINHANGANHA in Wiradjuri language translates as ‘Remember, know, think’.  The film is a lyrical journey of archival footage and sound, poetry and original composition commissioned by the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA).   It is an examination of how archives and the legacies of collection affect First Nations people and wider Australia, as told by Jazz Money as she explains. The Sydney Poetry Picnic is a celebration of poetry. Now in its eighth year, is an acknowledgement of the efforts undertaken throughout the year by the conveners of poetry in forging poetry communities and developing support of the art form in Sydney and New South Wales. We hear from a few of the representatives on their events, Albert Lin, Defne, Peter Roads and Gillian Swain. Opera Australia opens this summer with Mozart’s  The Magic Flute. Tenor, Michael Smallwood is in Sydney for his Australian debut with Opera Australia the first time he has sung in the Sydney Opera House.

Lost in Palm Springs evolved as an exhibition in response to three artist research residencies undertaken by Dr Greer Honeywill in Palm Springs. The exhibition on at the Manly Art Gallery explores the resurgence of mid-century modern architecture and design not only in Palm Springs and Joshua Tree in the US but also in Australian locations such as Mt Eliza, Canberra, Mermaid Beach and Sydney.  Greer Honeywill provides us insight. In Our Time: Four decades of art from China and beyond has been assembled from Australian economist and diplomat Dr Geoff Raby’s art collection of artworks by more than 75 artsist working both in China and Australia over a 35 year period beginning in the mid-1980s. Bala Starr, Director of La Trobe Art Institute who are in partnership with The National Art School shares her thoughts on openeing night. Daniel Ionita, President Australian Romanian Academy, academic, poet and the curatorial advisor for The Universal within the Local, The Loneliness of the Long Distance Poet, a cultural performance event that celebrates the Romanian National poet, Mihai Eminescu. He talks us through this cross-cultural annual event.

Summer sessions continue with good vibrations from the Sydney Festival’s program. Benjamin Skepper is a musician, composer, multidisciplinary artist and co-curator if the Temperament series, a week-long celebration and deconstruction of Bach. He presents a a site-specific live remix of his own composition, Praeludium y Fuga. Sue Healey’s work draws its inspiration from dance as a transformative and poetic language of movement. On View – ICONS is a cinematic tribute to six icons of Australian dance. It’s an immersive multi-screen video installation that combines dance and film. We hear an intimate account of the project.
