Program 23-22 Arts Friday on Eastside Radio

Before the age of web fiction and e-readers, the history of the written word in China dates back over 4000 years. Shuo Shu, or the art of storytelling is the summer exhibition at White Rabbit Gallery. The art form has become a dying tradition with contemporary Chinese audiences turning their attention to digital content. Assistant Curator at White Rabbit Gallery, Meng Yu Chan, provides us insight. Sydney based artist Sonia Mattson talks about her latest project, which is a culmination of portraiture of people and places.  The Blue Series and Other Art Paintings exhibition is on at the Arthouse HotelMentalism is an exhibition at the Darlinghurst Road Gallery, by Christophe Domergue.  It the latest iteration of his goal to highlight the beauty of outsiders, both people and places, that don’t meet traditional societal standards and expectations.  We hear from him on matters of life, times and art.

Program 22-22 Arts Friday on Eastside Radio

The season of gifting brings with it the quarterly East Sydney Art Walk, which maps 18 galleries across seven inner city suburbs for one afternoon. Primary coordinators and Stanley Street Gallerists, Liza Feeney and Merilyn Bailey tell us what to expect. International Day of People with Disability, which is held on 3 December each year. It is a United Nations observed day aimed at increasing public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with disability. It’s also a day that celebrates the contributions and achievements of people with disability. Debra Keenahan is a mother, an artist, humanitarian, psychologist and performer, Debra has a passion for ‘disability aesthetics’: changing point of view in immersive ways. Her extensive resume includes performance theatre works, photography, virtual reality and visual art. Her latest work, Othering is a multidisciplinary work that encourages audiences to reflect on the casual ill treatment of people with dwarfism and in turn, those who are perceived as ‘outside the norm’. It premiere’s at the Sydney Festival in January and we hear from Debra.

Support for the NSW Ukranian community comes with a campaign exhibition Ukraine Mon Amour on at the Darlington Install Project. Sydney artist Steve Starr has been working with the Ukrainian community in Sydney to help ease the transition into Australian life for Ukrainian refugees. The Ukrainian Council of NSW has partnered with BeKindSydney to launch the Help Ukrainians to Sydney donation program. Art4Healing is a hybrid event aimed to support women and girls to live their best lives. Funds raised will support the Healing From Within Program and the My Way Youth Program, which is made possible through the Womens Justice NetworkJessica Camilleri, is a youth worker and talks us through the programs. Opera Australia presents Carmen, at Cockatoo Island, Liesel Baddorek tells us what to expect and cast member Daniel Sumegi talks about his role as Escamillo.

Program 19-22 Arts Friday on Eastside Radio

COMA contemporary art space present a group exhibition that bridges their two galleries in Darlinghurst and Chippendale. The Throat of the Snake, centres around mortality and resistance and living an enigmatic opposition to disappearing. Founder of COMA, and the curator of the exhibition Sotiris Sotitiou, provides insight. Lara Merrett works with an expanded field of painting, with as deep an understanding of the interplays of colour as those of surface in works of both intimate and monumental scale. By my side, walking is an experimental installation created in collaboration with Cave Urban and is her solo debut at Sullivan + Strumpf. Story Week is an annual spoken word performance festival organised by Word Travels. First Person Voice, questions sovereignty self-determination and First Nations people controlling their own narratives. Featured is Sydney based Indigenous hip hop and R’n’B artist Kootsie Don, who gives us a little of her story.

Ageism Awareness Day is on 7 October, which coincides with the UN’s International Day of Older Persons. Rebecca Carpenter-Mew’s is a research student in English Literature at Flinders University College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences, challenges us to reconsider the depiction of older women in literary fiction. Curatorial + Co brings together gallery and design experts to discuss the best way to incorporate contemporary art with great design. Art for Design is an advisory platform into the world of interiors to provide the practical tools needed to build confidence in choosing art. Sophie Vender, Director shares secrets on pairing contemporary art and design. Opera Australia Baritone, Luke Gabbedy is in demand, and he provides an insight into the roles on stage and in life.

The Sydney Chamber Opera’s (SCO) presents the Australian Premiere of Awakening Shadow, in a first Australian staging of Benjamin Britten’s five Canticles. Composed by Luke Styles, the work channels Britten’s crisis of faith through the singing body. Music director, and SCO’s Artistic Director, Jack Symonds talks us through the performance. The 12th annual Hidden Rookwood Sculpture exhibition returns with 60 creative artworks strategically placed within the largest necropolis in the Southern Hemisphere and the world’s largest remaining operating cemetery from the Victorian era. The curator Kath Fries shares her thoughts. Hear from three poets, Tatiana Bonch, Jonathan Cant and Les Wicks, recorded live at Pie in the Sky Poets, presented by Poetry Sydney, from Since I Left You.

Sydney Contemporary opens at Carriageworks with more than 450 artists and over 90 galleries. The program provides collectors, industry professionals and the art loving public access to cutting-edge art. It includes art performances, talks, food-and-drink. Hear from a number of those participating. blackbirds don’t mate with starlings is the first full-length collection of poetry by Janaka Malwatta. It’s a work of activism, fury and hope. Published by University of Queensland Press, the collection combines performance poetry with poetries of witness and memory.

Sydney Contemporary returns in September, staged at Carriageworks the Fair welcomes over 90 galleries showcasing the work of over 450 leading and emerging artists.  Fair Director, Barry Keldoulis provides industry insights and guides us through what we can expect. The recipient of the 2022 NSW Visual Arts Emerging Fellowship has been announced.  Eddie Abd was awarded the $30,000 Fellowship earlier this week. Eddie talks about her art practice and her Fellowship program. The 8th annual Smart Phone Flick Festival SF3, is one of Australia’s leading and innovative film festivals in the world. Angela Blake, Co-Founder and Director talks us through this year’s Festival screening in November.

The Darlinghurst Road Gallery for emerging Australian artists opens with Jake Moss, an artist from Queensland. Up Close, from a Distance is a solo exhibition of new work using a variation of mediums that reflect memories of living spaces growing-up. Reconfiguration is Denis Clarke’s latest exhibition at the Stanley Street Gallery. It explores the changing subjectivities of the artist’s gaze within the language of the figure as he explains. Open Channels is Kate Mitchell’s latest work presented at Chalk Horse. The video work sets about providing a vision of an escape route from the relentless path we are on through investigations in to psychic phenomena. The Beatnik Cathedral at the Addi Road Community Centre will be host to Intuition Kingdom, a night of music, poetry, conversation and improvised performance. Award wining poet and critic Felicity Plunkett talks us through what we can expect.

Celebrated Murri artist, Gordon Hookey opens a survey exhibition at UNSW Galleries. A Murrality presents perspectives on historical and contemporary issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples across three decades of work. Gordon is known for his satire on Australian culture and politics, clever critique of racism, and explorations of oral and image-based history-making traditions. Paris based Australian artist, Gregory Hodge, construct illusionary paintings from a mélange of source material, which blur the boundaries between two-and-three dimensions and playfully explore the space between image, reality, representation and abstraction. Gregory talks from in amongst his exhibition, Figures, Lights and Landscapes on at Sullivan + Strumpf. Kathy Golski has a new suite of watercolour landscapes in Breathing Again, an exhibition presented by Damien Minton at Sheffer Gallery. Kathy talks about her observational works that provide a sense of the regenerative healing power of the Australian bush. We hear from a number of artists, who exhibited at The Other Art Fair Sydney, 21-24 July 2022.
