Program 08-22 Arts Friday on Eastside Radio: 030622

The recipient of both the NSW Premier’s Literary Book of the Year Award, and Multicultural NSW Award, Safdar Ahmed speaks on his graphic novel Still Alive: Notes from Australia’ Immigration Detention System, Twelve Panel Press (2021). He’s an artist, writer, academic and community art worker and a leading-light on the issues people of an asylum seeker or refugee background experience. His insights are confronting and a catalyst for change.

Safdar’s work with the Refugee Art Project, a small not for profit community art organisation dedicated to supporting people of an asylum seeker or refugee background through art workshops and collaborations has been a catalyst for his graphic storytelling.

The Refugee Art Project began through facilitated art workshops in the Villawood Detention Centre in 2011 and is now based in the Thirning Villa Studio in Ashfield, Sydney.

Refugee Art Week is on this month from the 19th – 25th June.  For more information on how you can get involved visit https://www.refugeeweek.org.au/
