The Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize is an annual acquisitive prize that was launched in 2017 to advance art and opportunity for emerging and established women artists in Australia. Now in its seventh year, it is the highest-value professional artist prize for women in Australia. With a record-breaking 2042 entries received in 2023, the Opening Night on Friday 12 May, showcased 119 Finalists representing every state and territory across Australia. Hear from award winners Alethea Richter, Emerging Artist Prize; Wiradjuri artist Freyja Fristad, recipent of the Indigenous Emerging Artist Prize and Finalist Tanya Linney. The Great Dead Body Teachers is the story of how Sydney based journalist, Jackie Dent’s grandparents gave their bodies to science when they died. Jackie weaves the personal with the history of medical research while exploring the practicalities and ethics of whole-body dissection. A first time finalist Julia Gutman is shifting the boundaries of contemporary painting in Australia, as winner of the Archibald Prize 2023 for her portrait of singer-songwriter Jessica Cerro. A studio interview broadcast in July last year in the lead-up to her first solo exhibition, Muses at sullivan + strumpf.

The Addi Road Writers Festival is an independent one-day cultural happening held on the grounds of the Addi Road Centre in Marrickville, on Saturday, 20th May. This year’s theme is Inner Worlds, and we explore the curatorial direction by the Co-Artistic Directors, Mark Mordue and Sheila Ngoc Pham, who also preview the program. The international art fair for independent artists, The Other Art Fair presents its upcoming Sydney edition with 130 artists, art experiences and a few surprises., we hear from Luke Potkin, Fair Director. CUT N POLISH: Artist Car Boot Sale is back following a huge success of the inaugural event last year. The one-day car boot sale features over 140 artists selling their works direct to the public in a dynamic, market-style setting. Three artists, Hugh Black, Sean Crowley and Anna Mould are collaboratively presenting a stall, and they talk us through what they are planning. The Pyrmont Art Prize celebrates its 11th anniversary at the Pyrmont Festival, which happens at Pirrama Park over the weekend. Lesley Dimmick, artist and Manager of TAP Gallery, who presents the Prize, tells us more.

What does it feel like to know you are dead? Richard James Allen reflects a lifelong engagement with Buddhist and Yogi Philosophies in Text Messages from the Universe. The Gala screening and book launch is an alluring, and unsettling images, music and words that is set to transport you through an afterlife encounter. Drawing inspiration from The Tibetan Book of the Dead, reimagined in a cinematic blend of text and dance action, it evokes a dislocated interval of consciousness, an intermediate state, between death and rebirth. A state known as the ‘Bardo’. Ultra-Sonic is an exhibition on at the Sydney College of the Arts, that is an unconventional musical and sonic lines through the flotsam and jetsam of the complications of installation art to create a new territory. Curators, Joyce Hinterding and David Haines drive us through the exhibition while stationary in their parked car with seatbelts on. Surry Hills @ Play Festival is on this month, aims to support the local economy, community development through the sense of play. Reactivate Consulting are the organisation behind the initiative and we find out more from Susie Rugg. The Pyrmont Art Prize and Festival story will run on Friday, 7 May 2023.

Art Pharmacy is an art consultancy that implements creative visions and cultural projects in Australia, and are presenting a series of panel discussions. The third, Curate Your City stimulates conversation on the future of art projects in the public realm. Digital Strategist and Curator, Michelle Wang, provides insight. Just Not Australian presents work by Australian artists at the forefront of national debate and practice. This exhibition brings together 19 artists across generations and diverse cultural backgrounds to deal broadly with the origins and implications of contemporary Australian nationhood. The exhibition returns to Sydney after being on tour since 2020, on at the Museum of Sydney. Curator at Artspace, Talia Linz talks us through the premise and the impacts on Australian communities. Joan Cross works across a range of mediums, including drawing, painting, installations, sculpture, video, and virtual reality. Her work investigates the legacy of colonialism in Australia. I give you a mountain, is a video animation presented as part of Just Not Australian. Opening in May at the Woollahra Gallery at Redleaf is NATIVE DEITIES, an exhibition that gives homage to Australia’s unique natural landscape. Bruce Slorach marks 40 years since graduating from the Victorian College of Arts and commencing a creative career that would evolve over decades. He offers us a preview of the exhibition.

The National 4: Australian Art Now is the fourth iteration of the biennial survey of contemporary Australian art. Collectively it bring together 80 artists, engaging in 48 new artist projects across four major institutions, The AGNSW, MCA, Carriageworks and for the first time, the Campbelltown Arts Centre (CAC). We hear from Melbourne based artist, David Sequeira, on his work Song for Gentleness, a presentation of over 300 songs in a grid along the gallery walls, AGNSW. South Australian artist, Gerry Wedd, talks us through his work, Where are we now? Consists of 600 plus hand-form tiles and vessels that champions the role of ceramics as a too for mass communication, AGNSW. Indonesian-born, Sydney-based artist, Jumaadi’s work, Joli Jolan comprises a series of white paper cutouts assembled on a black painted wall to create a monochromatic reverse-silhouette scene of numerous humanoid figures, CAC.

Symbols matter. The tension between what is and what is not is there in the great novels and paintings: harshness and beauty. Italian Sydney based artist, Simone Piccioni’s latest exhibition, The Australian AEffect challenges the balance between the act of creating art and transcends any superficial desire for beauty. We take a Gallery walk with Simone at Studio W. Remarkable new life is a flutter in the grand scale of Puccini’s Madama Butterfly at Macquaries Point. Opera Australia’s Revival Director, Susana Gómez was born in Oviedo (Spain) where she graduated in English Literature and Literary Theory. She trained as a pianist and actor and focused on physical theatre during some long-term stays in Germany and Argentina. She talks of the soaring emotions of the natural world and human relations of the contemporary interpretation.

#EmbraceEquity campaign theme seeks to get the world talking about why ‘equal opportunities are no longer enough’ and can in fact be exclusionary, rather than inclusive. On today’s program we hear from the perspectives of women on equality versus equity and what this year’s theme means to them. The Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize is Australia’s highest value acquisitive art prize for women with over $45,000 in prize money across four categories. We hear from Kathryn Minkley, artist, curator and Head Arts Department. Over the last 30 years Roslyn Sharp has gained a reputation for her disciplined but sympathetic mode of social documentation. Much of it centred around portraits, events and sites of Darlinghurst, Kings Cross, Woolloomooloo and Potts Point. The Messenger reveals new facets of the visual style of Sharp. A one-week exhibition presented as part of a suite of four exhibitions over a month by Damien Minton at Sheffer Gallery, Darlington. We hear from her in conversation with Sandy Edwards, Creative producer, Arthere.

Opera Australia’s soprano Jane Ede, on Donzetti’s Tudor trilogy, Roberto Deverux can be accessed on Arts Friday, 17 March 2023.

PRIDE AT PLAY lets you explore the world of queer indie games. The exhibition and associated webpage allows you to engage with queer interactive games while also contributing to advance research on how computer games can enable queer experience. Xavier Ho is the co-curator, an award-winning interactive designer, who conceived of the exhibition now on at the Sydney College of Arts Project Space and is our queer gamer guide. Dylan Mooney’s light artwork, Still here and thriving, focuses on love in queer society. The large-scale portraits explore identity, desire and representation from his experiences as a proud, queer indigenous man. The work is part of Queer in Warrane, at the Hyde Park Barracks, presented by the Museums of History NSW, in celebration of Sydney WorldPride. Sydney WorldPride leads us into the Festival with a suite of exhibitions including Word Made Flesh, a major immersive installation at Carriageworks, by Melbourne artist Paul Yore. Yore has composed makeshift structures, mixed media sculpture and found objects, collage and assemblage, paintings, video, and pulsating sound and light and he lights us up with his thoughts. Death: and becoming is the latest exhibition at the Bearded Tit, in Redfern. Poet Imbar Amira Nassi has his curatorial debut and shares an excerpt of the exhibition description along with a poem. We also hear from exhibiting artists: Annie Parnell, Antony Youssef and Black. Passage is a new art gallery located in the Prince Trade Centre in Haymarket. The opening exhibition Open Ceremony, by Eduardo Wolfe-Alegria is a body of work that interprets his memories and encounters through a lens of surrealism. Marco Rinaldi, Director and the exhibiting artist Eduardo tell us more. The Last Picture Show is the final exhibition at Duck Rabbit, which is set to close its doors after a successful exhibitive program that has been operating since the 2000s. Hugh Ramage is an artist, painter, sculptor and the founder of Duck Rabbit, and he talks us through a snapshot of the journey.

The summer of opera begins with the Sydney Festival in the first week of January 2023. Sydney Chamber Orchestra Australian premiere of their newest opera, Antarctica by leading composer Mary Finsterer at Carriageworks. Hear from Mary on the production, Antarctica which explores the historical, mythical and scientific conceptions and stories about the southern continent. Opera Australia presents Puccini’s original bohemian love story La Bohème, and principal soprano Julie Lea Goodwin provides us with an insight. Message Bank combines location-based media and binaural audio with a story of intrigue, paranoia, and mischief to deliver an ambitious and innovative audio experience at Parramatta Square, Director and writer Nick Atkins explains how the immersive experience works. Local Sydney based musician Peter Miller Robinson, performs in studio.
